Striped Bass: They run in the Delaware Bay begining in March. We target them with top water plugs. Once April comes around and the water begins to warm up we begin using Herring, Bunker, and Clam as bait. This continues through May.
Throughout the summer months I target Stripers in the back bays with jigs and bucktails, and at times with Clam. During the Autumn I start using top water plugs and poppers. I also begin targeting the beaches with bait and plugs.
The end of October starts chunking season, where we target Stripers with hunks of fresh Bunker back in the Delaware Bay. This usually continues up through December. During this time the Rips off Cape May usually turn on using Eels and jigs.
Weakfish: Usually targeted in the Spring and again in Autumn. Usually the best approach is from the sod banks, or drifting along them. During the Autumn, large schools of spikes congregate off the beaches and in the Bay. Jigs and bait are used during both runs.
Bluefish: Much the same a Weakies as far as when they are targeted and how. Lots of fun off the beaches during the Autumn run!
Black Drum: The bruiser shows up in the Delaware Bay in late April to early May with the Moon and gnats. Targeted using Clam on the bottom. Not the most exciting fishing, but loads of fun when you get into them.
Tautog: These black beauties are a blast to catch nearly year round. They hide in structure offshore as well as inshore and in the back bays. They love Crabs and Clam and readily hit both. Tough regulations keep the stock numbers up, but limit table fare, none the less, they are a challenging and fun target.
Sharks: While never really my main quarry, I will occasionally target sharks for some drag screaming fun from late Spring through the summer. Due to the closure of Sand Bar Sharks this past year, I will most likely not target them at all. Sometimes when targeting Brownies, you catch the occasional Sand Tiger (also illegal to possess) which is a great bruising battler. All sharks are released boatside with as little harm as p[ossible irregardless! Strictly CPR (catch, photograph, and release) fishing.
Sea Bass, Trigger Fish, Croakers, and Porgies: Fun fish that show up on structure and elsewhere, including the back waters at various times, usually Summer and Autumn. Targeted with bait and a blast to catch with kids.
Kingfish: Fun little guys that make great table fare. Targeted in the ocean, back bays, and from the beach during the late summer and Autumn months.
Speckled Trout: Not a Weakie. These beauties show up in the Spring and later Autumn in various spots. They are a well kept secret. Targeted with plugs and jigs they are a blast to catch and a very wary and challenging opponent.
I target what's out there and do my best to put you on the fish. I stick to the bag limits and rules as they apply. No, I will not run you out past the 3 mile limit to chase Stripers, nor can you keep an extra one of anything with a bag limit. I urge you to toss the big breeders back and eat the smaller ones too. It's fishing, not catching. It's a lifetime activity and a passion I try to pass on to all those who step onto my boat or into my truck.
