Certification FAQs

I was born before January 1, 1979. Am I required to complete a boating safety course in order to operate a Personal Watercraft? Yes. You must be 16 years of age or older and have a boating safety certificate in order to operate a Personal Watercraft.

I am 16 years old. Am I required to complete a boating safety course in order to operate a power vessel? Yes. All persons 16 years of age or older born on or after January 1, 1979 are required to complete an approved safety course prior to operating any power vessel.

I am between 13 and 15 years old. May I operate a power vessel? Yes, if you have a boating safety certificate and with the following restrictions. The vessel is (1) powered by a motor of less than 1HP or a 12-volt electric motor or (2) 12 feet or greater in length and powered by a motor, or combination of motors, of less than 10 HP.

I am under 13 years old. May I operate a power vessel? No. The miminum age for certification is 13. No persons under this age may operate any power vessel on NJ waters.
